if you have got travel plans today, nice and quiet as we get into late night tonight and saturday, that is a different story. we'll be talk about that all morning as we have more snow in the forecast. let's get started with current conditions and wear nice and quiet. do have some clouds rolling through. kind of a partly cloudy overnight period. that is helping to hold the temperatures up a little bit. we haven't had any freezing temperatures yet. what is going to happen today? we'll see partial sunshine. we should be nice and quiet. storminess off to the south and west will be developing. monday and wednesday, it hooks like we'll be doing a snow-rain -- it looks like we'll be down a snow-rain mix. more on that coming up. forecast for today, partly sunny, highs about 40 degrees.

soon, only hours will be left to reach a come nice in the fiscal cliff talks. president obama is holding a summit at the white house today with congressional leaders and members of the house have to be back to work by 6:30 sunday night leaving them with just over 4 hours to come to a conclusion. steep cuts and tax hikes impacting from everything from your paycheck to the defense budget could take effect. norman schwarzkopf has died. the retired general died from complications of pneumonia. he was best nope for leading international forces in iraq in 19916789 he was 78. former president george h. w. bush remains in intensive care at a texas hospital this morning. his chief of staff says bush is getting excellent medical care but expects nobody the hospital for a while. he is battling bronchitis and

other complications from it. the 88-year-old was admitted to the hospital more than a month ago. three people were killed when a tractor-trailer that was stopped in traffic was rear ended by a pickup. all of the victims were in the pickup. this happened about 7:00 last night and traffic was still moving slowly in the area late last night. in other news, hundreds of teachers in utah taking a gun training course in the wake of shooting tragedy in newtown, connecticut. >> the idea of arming teachers is he lifting both support and op indication. we have a report. >> reporter: gun rights advocates in utah offering free gun training for teachers. utah shooting sports council saying the 200 person, six-hour course was filled to capacity. >> to protect my children in case of any assault, any bad guys coming in to attack. >> reporter: in an effort to

arms teachers at schools a firearms group in ohio launching a test program. and arizona proposing a change to state law to allow an educator in each school to carry a gun. >> if you have somebody come in that is mentally ill with a weapon and they're killing people, an administrator or teacher can figure that out. >> the move comes after the recent shooting massacre in newtown, connecticut. a gunman shot and killed 26 people at sandy hook elementary school. 20 of the victims were young children. gun rights advocates saying teachers can act more quickly than law enforcement in the critical first few minutes to protect children during the school shooting. but some teachers strongly disagree with the idea. >> i think it is ridiculous. i don't think that teachers should be carrying guns. i don't think violence is the answer and the biggest thing i don't think is i don't think it will solve the problem. >> reporter: only a handful of

have to fit quite right yet. i have to adjust it a little bit. a little wardrobe malfunction this morning. it is in the 30s this morning. 35 at dulles and bwi marshall. we'll be looking at high temperatures about 40, maybe 42 today with partial sunshine. today looks just fine although it won't be a perfectly sunny day. you can see you've got lots of clouds across the mid-atlantic and pushing up into new england. you can see the clouds working through today. quieter day than yesterday. not nearly as windy. that will be nice for those of you that want to be outside for any period of time and for the get blown down the street. cold conditions. sun here and there and it will be increasing the clouds ahead of our next system. i'll have more detail on that. >> we're not done with this. >> time to say hello to jeff

congressional leaders later on today. >> so far, republicans have rejected any new taxes even those proposed by house speaker john boehner on people earning over a million dollars. the senate is in session on capitol hill and house speerk barren has called lawmakers back into session sunday night at 6:30. that only leaves just over 24 hours to come up with a deal. republican and democratic leaders in the senate continue to blame the other side. >> i guess w dysfunctional republican caucus in the house, even the speaker can't tell what they're going to do. he backed off of even his own proposal. >> republicans aren't about to write a blank check for anything senate democrats put forward just because we find ourselves at the edge of the cliff. >> we want to know your thoughts on all of this. what do you think about congress not reaching a deal on the fiscal cliff. do you think it is possible that a compromise will be

as stormin' norman. former president bush approved the following statement. statem >> in the late '80s, general schwarzkopf was promossed to general and later appointed commander in chief of the u.s. central command. general colin powell released this statement which read in part, with the passing of general h. norman schwarzkopf, america lost a great patriot. general schwarzkopf was 78 years old. the white house released

traffic is back to normal on the springfield interchange as virginia police continue to investigate a deadly accident that happened there. that accident did happen around 7:00 last night when a tractor- trailer stopped in traffic. it was rear ended by a pickup truck. three people inside the pickup truck died at the scene. police are offering a reward leading to information in the death of jason emma. he was shot multiple times in the early-morning hours of christmas eve. he was found sitting in his car outside of his home along c street. police say his body was slumped over the wheel. vehicle was still running.

they think he was killed when two men tried to rob him. new details now on an armed carjacking in manassas. police say they arrested four teenagers, ages 12 to 17. investigators say the teens were armed with stolen bb guns. that particular incident happened on wednesday, just after 9:00 p.m. on community drive. the stolen car was found about an hour later at a nearby mcdonald's. police are still looking for a fifth teen. a news alert from the district. d.c. police are looking for this man. they say he is responsible for robbing a sun trust bank on 17th street northwest yesterday. investigators say the suspect walked in around 1:00 p.m. and demanded cash. surveillance photos got a good look at the man's face as you can see right here. police are asking anyone who recognizes him to give him a call. coming up next, the redskins and cowboys. we know it is a storied rivalry

the northeast is starting to dig out after a massive winter storm slammed the region dumping up to two feet of snow across upstate new york and northern new england. heavy rain and strong winds pounded coastal areas devastated by superstorm sandy less than two months ago. the winter storm system is now blamed for at least 16 deaths nationwide. here in our area, maryland is reporting a death of a man in frederick county due to hypothermia. officials say the man was 65 or older but they are not releasing any information about the circumstances or his identity. with the chances of more winter weather heading our way, now is a great time to get the fox 5 weather app. search for d.c. weather in the app store. you can also text fox 5 weather

morning hours tomorrow. 37 now in washington. no snow in the forecast today. leonardtown, you're down to 32 degrees. 30 in fredericksburg. 28 in culpeper. culpeper, you are always running cold. 32 in winchester. these temperatures actually held up a little bit with the cloud cover that we've seen roll through here overnight. nice and quiet. we are not expecting any rain shower or snow shower activity today. we do have a lot of clouds across the mid-atlantic. you can see out to the midwest, we have some cloud cover as well. our friday will feature partly sunny skies. it won't be a terribly beautiful day with highs in the low 40s. the wind much lighter than what we had around here yesterday. a little wave of low pressure is going to develop off to the south and west. clouds will get in here tonight and we should start to see snow break out across the area by day break tomorrow. let's put futurecast in motion to show you what is going to be happening. again, no problems today. here we are at 7:00 a.m.

tomorrow. once again, getting that little wedge of snow developing across the area. the rain-snow line, once again, pretty amazing to do it for the third time this week. so south and east, you are likely to transition to rain. further north and west, likely to remain snow throughout the event and the whole thing gets out of here by 4:00 in the afternoon tomorrow. how much snow are we talking about? >> probably an inch or two here locally in the immediate washington 95 corridor. you might see another inch or so, maybe 3 or 4 as you get much further north and west up into northwest portions of maryland. and a little less here the farther south and east you get. parts of the area, southern maryland, calvert county, even down towards st. mary's county, you might see more snow with this particular round than you've seen so far this week. winds here out of the north and west at five to 10 miles per

hour. and then we cloud up tonight with light snow becoming likely here late tonight. by day break tomorrow, overnight low, freezing mark, 32. when it starts to fall, it will likely stick around here as well. here is your accu-weather seven- day forecast and the pattern remains very active here for the next couple of days. high temperature tomorrow, only 38 degrees that. snow-rain line will get close to even here in washington by late morning tomorrow. we may transition over to a little rain before things wrap up. sunday looks good. breezy conditions and cold for that redskins game sunday night. make sure you bring a jacket. monday night, we've got the first night activities with new year's. should be fine, nice and dry but cold. maybe a few snow showers and rain showers on new year's day. high temperature, 38 degrees. that is a look at weather. continue to be updates here over the next five hours. that will be fun. let's get to traffic with jeff newman. >> good morning. as you can see, very light

volume coming in on 66 heading from n. from gainesville and passing manassas through centreville and to the beltway. westbound looking good as well inside the beltway. moving at speed through falls church and arlington. not expecting a busy commute as the holiday week continues. no school, of course. north of the american legion bridge, here is your approach around river road. inner loop looks great over into prince george's county. no problems over on 270 and headed down from laurel, no incidents. virginia roadways are looking good as well with light volume coming up from fredericksburg to springfield inside the beltway on 395. you are running incident-free as well to the 14th street bridge. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. the redskins-cowboys rivalry is always fun to watch. but this time around, it is really big. the two teams face off at fedex field on sunday and it is a

this this is new surveillance video showing a tornado tearing through a parking lot in mobile, alabama on christmas day. customers and staffer inside the walgreen's store where this was taken were not seriously injured but the store saw some minor damage. power is back on in maryland this morning after some strong winds knocked out tower for several homes in takoma park yesterday. at the height of the gusts, pepco tells us 1700 of its customers lost electricity. winds clocked in at 40 miles per hour in some parts of our area. the strong winds also knocking down a few trees and causing one maryland day care to close early. >> we were in class enjoying our day and then the lights blinked and then they went out. >> he can be with me. it's fun. i just won't get as much work done. he'll be with me. >> pepco contracted linemen

from alabama to help local crews turn the lights and heat back on. coastal communities in central new jersey still recovering from sandy are dealing with more flooding this morning. high tide caused rivers to overflow and ocean waves to reach coastal hourss. the beach here in seabright is especially vulnerable to flooding because the hurricane took with a most of the sand. >> they can -- took away most of the sand. >> they just can't catch a break. still ahead, you may find your grocery budget pretty much stretched. >> yeah, it is. and now the price of one staple in the fridge could be going way up. details on another deadline congress is facing that could hit the price of milk pretty hard. we'll tell you about it when we come back.

lift. >> we have more on what is being dubbed the milk cliff. >> reporter: cows on the cliff or at least their milk while all eyes are fixed on the fiscal cliff. there is another deadline quickly approaching, the milk cliff. it is part of a stalled farm bill with as much as $35 billion in cuts. if the bill doesn't make it through congress before the end of the year, the government will be forced to buy vast quantities of milk under a truman era law that could send consumer milk has high as $6 to $8 a gallon because the government would be forced to pay twice the rate under the 1949 rules. fomples are would sell their milk to the government first prompting a shortage in supplies which would spike the price consumers pay. >> the farm bill is like this low hanging ornament on the congressional christmas tree that, if they just embrace, it they can automatically come up with tens of billions ever dollars in budget savings. >> reporter: the problem is the bill is stuck in the house and there appears to be no

political will to move it forward. agriculture secretary tom vilsack says out of precaution, his department is preparing for the law to take effect. >> this is a bad outcome. let me be very clear about this. i don't think we should want nor should we advocate for nor should congress consider it a good outcome that permanent law goes into effect. >> reporter: and it is not just of the cows going over the cliff. it could be the crops too. >> things like wheel and corn, their permanent law price supports wouldn't kick in until the growing season. those pieces of legislation are tied to the growing season for the crops and that wouldn't be until the spring. >> reporter: the 1949 law was introduce as a poison pill. now, it threatens to sour americans f
